An inspiring true-life survival story set in the remote backcountry of the Canadian Rockies.

In August 2017, 32-year-old Jeremy Evans endured multiple ferocious attacks by a protective female grizzly bear while hunting in the Alberta wilderness.

Jeremy’s injuries were massive, his scalp and face destroyed, an eye and his jaw dangling down. The tendons on one leg had been fully severed during the mauling. His hands were damaged where he had physically fought the bear. It was more than a dozen kilometres to where he had parked his truck in darkness early that morning and absolutely no one was near. Thoughts of his wife and their eight-month-old daughter consumed Jeremy as he stumbled and crawled for hours back to his truck, before driving himself several kilometres to a backcountry lodge for help. All the while, Jeremy thought of his young family and the upcoming sixth wedding anniversary that he feared he might never be able to celebrate.

Mauled carefully details what happened deep in an Alberta forest where few modern humans tread. Jeremy’s miraculous recovery and life lessons learned when so close to death show that human determination can defy the greatest of odds, and that setting small goals along the road to recovery can lead to remarkable achievements. Despite the traumatic stress the encounter produced, Jeremy holds no animosity toward the bear and still enjoys spending time in the backcountry. To him the grizzly was doing what the best parents do: protect their young.

More than just a bear book

I just finished reading “Mauled.” I first came across Jeremy’s story in a podcast. His story is simply amazing, and the way he described the encounter and his recovery was just different than other survivor’s stories. I made note of his book from that podcast, recently purchased a copy, and read it. This book is written from the perspectives of Jeremy, his wife Joyce, and is knitted together by the narration of Crosbie Cotton. I wasn’t really expecting this format, but it works, it provided more depth to the story. Even after listening to the podcast, his story of survival and perseverance in these pages is no less amazing. It was worth the read. His simple closing quote “When you think you can’t go on, rest assured you can” is the key takeaway for what he endured, and what could be applied to other life challenges. His openness and candor of both the good and the bad, and to ask for help and advocate for those with PTSD, is inspirational. I bought it for the bear story, but it’s more than that.

Great Read!!

I saw this book at a Trading Post In Kananaskis Country, Alberta. I was intrigued by the cover and being that I have a phobia about bears and about to hike in bear country for the first time, I really wanted to buy it. Truthfully, the price of $25 was the reason I didn't buy it then and there. I waited until I got home so I could check Amazon hoping for a better price but it was the same. I couldn't get the book off my mind so I bought it and I am so happy I did. It is an easy read, I finished it in one day, mostly because I couldn't put it down once I started. He tells a very compelling story and you can picture it in your mind. I highly recommend this book. Buy it!!

Pretty good read

As others have pointed out, lots of rookie mistakes were made by the author. I did find parts of the book to be poorly written and not well connected. Could have used some proof reading as well. All that said, pretty amazing story about a guy determined to live.

“Reading Mauled is a journey through the darkest of human experiences, from the edge of life to survival. I cringed with Jeremy as he endured the horrible trauma, and was buoyed by the uplifting spirit of his resilience as he works to rescue himself and restore the life he nearly lost. I was afraid for him, and inspired to see him get out, keep going and persevere.”—Alex Messenger, author of The Twenty-Ninth Day: Surviving a Grizzly Attack in the Canadian Tundra
